  • In late 1994, Ward Cunningham wrote the first wiki engine to host the "Portland (Design) Pattern Repository". It has evolved in features since then.

  • Soon thereafter, Patrick Mueller writes the first wiki clone using Rexx.

  • The original wiki is file based, newer engines can also use SQL databases.

  • Important features such as WikiCategories, ChangeSummary, etc. have been introduced and maintained by the community since the beginning.

  • Currently there are many wiki engines and derivatives. If you have a favorite programming language, chances are there is a wiki engine written using it.
